5 Tips to Make the Most Out of Your Family Portrait Session!

That’s my #ImprintsFamily right there! 👏🏽💛

I love taking annual holiday and Family Portraits of my Imprints Families throughout the year because they always bring so much joy, color, vibrancy, excitement and positive energy to their sessions. Pictured above is a sneak peek portrait from the Sheffield Family’s annual holiday portrait session in November when the beautiful fall colors were still present and the scenic environment was the PERFECT backdrop to capture their holiday cheer.

If you want gorgeous picture like theirs, here are 5 tips to make the most out of your Family Portrait session with Imprints By Maleshia J. Photography! Read on my friend.

1. Consult with your photographer to pick a session date and time that works for both your family and your photographer.

One of the first things that I do with my clients is chat with them to learn about the photography service they need, discuss the date, time and location of the session or event, and confirm my availability based on my business calendar. During this time you can also communicate your needs, your vision, and how you want to feel and look to your photographer before and during your session. This first step is a critical one as I have to make sure that I am available to serve my clients and can serve them best.

2. Choose a versatile location with landmarks you love.

Where you would like to have your family photo session is completely up to you, but if you need help picking a location, I am here to help! The #DMV Regions offers a wide selection of locations that are perfect to capture your family memories and I can help with suggesting great locations best on what you have in mind.

3. Plan, Plan, Plan!

Once you've confirmed your session date, time, and location, plan as much as you possibly can with your photographer beforehand. And I mean EVERYTHING. Planning may include the following items:

  • Picking your wardrobe style, color theme, and the look you are going for;

  • Mapping out your travel route the session location (and scoping out parking) and determined how long it will take to arrive at least 15 minutes before your session starts with traffic that time of the day; and

  • Research and share any photo inspiration or family posing ideas with your photographer.

Platforms such as Pinterest or Instagram make it easy for you create customized boards or saved collections for inspiration in a visually pleasing manner that is also sharable. These are a few suggestions that I’ve found to be very helpful for everyone.

4. Props are fun for everyone!

Props are optional, but highly encouraged if you have them because they can add variety of images to the final image gallery. A few props that some clients have brought in the past include flowers, blankets, hats, jewelry, signs, framed images, and balloons. What you decide to bring (and how many props you bring) is completely up to you and can represent you and your family’s personality.

5. Relax, have fun, and let your photographer know how you’re feeling!

Most importantly, remember that this session is about you and your family. So make it fun! I personally make it my mission to help bring my client’s vision to life and so much more. During a family portrait session, I frequently check in with everyone to make sure that they are feeling comfortable and having a great time, and to make sure that my clients are content with the images taken prior to closing out the session.

That’s exactly how I want to help you! I want my families to walk away from their family portrait session feeling accomplished, refreshed, content, and excited to see their final gallery with their family portraits. I hope these tips bring you comfort and assurance that your next family portrait sesison will be great!
